A plurality of Americans who live in counties that helped US President Donald Trump win the 2016 presidential election say the United States is worse off since he became president, a new poll shows.

The NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll published on Wednesday found that 41 percent of Americans who live in "Trump counties" said the US was in worse shape since Trump took office, while 32 percent believe the country is better off.

An additional 26 percent say the state of the nation has remained about the same.

The poll surveyed residents from 438 counties in the states of Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Wisconsin.

These counties are made up of people who are whiter, more rural, less educated and older compared to the rest of the country, the poll shows.

Trump has been accused of mishandling key issues like foreign policy, economy, immigration, health care and terrorism.

Nevertheless, the people in these counties still showed disregard for Trump's Democratic opponent, Hillary Clinton. Twenty three percent said they had a favorable view of her, while 54 percent viewed her negatively.

Overall, a majority of Americans continue to disapprove of the way Trump is handling his job and say he has not accomplished much during his first nine months in office, according to a Washington Post-ABC News survey released Sunday.

Trump is the only US leader since former President Harry Truman -- in office from 1945 until 1953 -- whose approval rating at this point in his presidency is net negative — by 22 points.

On Saturday, thousands of protesters marched in over 20 cities across the United States to denounce the policies of Trump and his administration.

The organizers of the protest, a group known as Refuse Fascism, have vowed to continue the protests “day and night” until their demand is met, which is the removal of Trump's “regime.”
