Myanmar cardinal urges Pope Francis to avoid using term 'Rohingya'

Pope Francis is expected to visit Myanmar from 27 to 30 November and neighboring Bangladesh from 30 November to 2 December.

Myanmar's senior Catholic priest Cardinal Charles Maung Bo on Wednesday urged Pope Francis to avoid using the term "Rohingya" during an upcoming visit, when he is expected to raise the humanitarian crisis the Muslim minority faces.

The Pope will visit largely Buddhist Myanmar from November 26 to November 30 before going to Bangladesh, a predominantly Muslim neighbor where more than 600,000 Rohingya have fled since August 25 to take shelter in refugee camps.

Pope Francis will meet Myanmar's top Buddhist monks and civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi during his visit before heading to Bangladesh, where he is expected to encourage resolving the refugee crisis through dialogue between the two countries.
