The international nuclear deal with Iran makes the world “safer,” says UK Foreign Minister Boris Johnson, emphasizing the need to protect the landmark 2015 agreement.
“The Iran nuclear deal makes the world safer, that’s why it is vital that the international community sticks to the deal,” Johnson said in statements released by the Foreign Office on Wednesday.
The top UK diplomat said he will use his visit to Washington later this week to persuade American officials not to quit the Iran nuclear deal amid US President Donald Trump’s push to undermine it.
Last month, Trump refused to certify Iran’s compliance with the nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), claiming that it was one of the “worst deals ever negotiated.”
In his trip, Johnson will meet Republican senator Bob Corker, a strong critic of Trump, as well as ranking members of congressional committees that have jurisdiction over foreign-policy legislation and investigations related to US foreign affairs.
This is while the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has repeatedly verified Iran’s compliance with the deal.
Under the deal, which was reached between Iran and the P5+1 group—the US, UK, France, China, Russia and Germany, Iran agreed to limit parts of its nuclear program in exchange for removal of all nuclear-related sanctions.
Following Trump’s move to decertify the deal, British Prime Minister Theresa May reaffirmed London’s commitment to the nuclear agreement and called on Washington to remain committed to the deal.
Johnson also criticized trump’s move back then, saying he had “absolutely no doubt” that the deal would survive Trump’s tantrums.
The European Union (EU) is also working with US Congress and the Trump to make sure that the deal remains in place, the bloc’s foreign policy chief, Federica Mogherini, said Tuesday.
