Shinzo Abe reelected Japan’s prime minister after big win
Shinzo Abe has been re-elected Japan’s prime minister by the parliament following his ruling party’s landslide victory in elections last month.
Lawmakers voted on Wednesday to reinstall Abe by a majority of 312 votes in the 465-seat lower house of the Japanese parliament. In the 242-seat upper house, he also won 151 votes.
“We hereby have decided to designate Shinzo Abe as the Prime Minister of Japan under the regulation of the parliament,” said Lower House Speaker Tadamori Oshima.
Abe is expected to reappoint his current cabinet ministers.
His Liberal Democratic Party-led coalition won a two-thirds “super majority” in snap elections on October 22, which Abe had called in a politically risky move to strengthen his mandate.
His ruling coalition already had a majority, but he needed stronger support to push his agenda to alter the country’s pacifist constitution.
Abe, who took office in December 2012, will meet with US President Donald Trump during the latter’s upcoming first Asia trip.
