Drone shows UNESCO site ravaged by fire in Brazil

Almost a quarter of Brazil’s Chapada dos Veadeiros National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, has been destroyed by the biggest fire in the history of the park that has been raging for over a week.

Almost a quarter of Brazil’s Chapada dos Veadeiros National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, has been destroyed by the biggest fire in the history of the park that has been raging for over a week.

The drone footage shows vast swathes of the park covered with smoke and being completely ravaged, damaging around 54,000 hectares (540 000 sq. meters) so far.

Despite the firefighters on site, the situation is still not under control. The cause of the disaster is not yet known, though the park's director Fernando Tatagiba suspects arson.

Chapada dos Veadeiros National Park that was created in 1961. It covers a territory of 240,000 hectares. The diverse fauna contains many species, some of which are near extinction.
