US Republican Senator Jeff Flake has rebuked President Donald Trump for his “reckless” behavior, calling him “dangerous to a democracy.”

“Reckless, outrageous, and undignified behavior has become excused and countenanced as ‘telling it like it is’ when it is actually just reckless, outrageous, and undignified,” said Flake in an impassioned speech on the Senate floor on Tuesday.

“When such behavior emanates from the top of our Government it is something else. It is dangerous to a democracy,” he stated.

The Arizona senator criticized Trump for “glorying in the things that divide us and calling fake things true and true things fake.”

"We must never regard as 'normal' the regular and casual undermining of our democratic norms and ideals. We must never meekly accept the daily sundering of our country — the personal attacks, the threats against principles, freedoms, and institutions, the flagrant disregard for truth or decency, the reckless provocations, most often for the pettiest and most personal reasons."

The key Republican critic of Trump also urged his fellow congressmen to speak out, saying, “Mr. President, I will not be complicit or silent." He also said that he will not seek reelection in 2018.

His speech has amounted to the strongest attack ever on Trump from a sitting member of his own party and came just hours after Bob Corker, a Republican senator from Tennessee, slated the president.

Corker, who chairs the powerful Senate Foreign Relations Committee, attacked Trump after the president said he had “helped President O[bama] give us the bad Iran Deal & couldn't get elected dog catcher in Tennessee, is now fighting Tax Cuts."

He responded to Trump in a tweet by saying, "Same untruths from an utterly untruthful president."

"I don't know why he lowers himself to such a low, low standard and debases our country in the way that he does, but he does," Corker later told CNN.

"He has proven himself unable to rise to the occasion" as president, Corker said in the interview conducted in a Senate hallway.

Trump has been criticized by both Democrats and Republicans for his domestic and foreign policies.

In the US, he has issued orders in a bid to ban travelers from Muslim-majority countries from entering the US and also threatened to expel undocumented immigrants from the country.

Abroad, Trump's policy toward North Korea has brought the US “to the brink of nuclear war,” experts and officials warn.

He has also been criticized for his refusal to certify the Iran nuclear agreement. Democrats have slammed the move as "a grave mistake" which risks provoking an unnecessary international crisis.
