New poll shows UK voters prefer Corbyn over May as PM

UK Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn

A new survey shows that the British opposition Labour Party is now more popular than the ruling Conservatives, with Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn believed to be a better candidate for premiership.

According to the poll conducted for The Independent by BMG Research, Labour is now backed by 42 percent of UK voters against 37 percent who support the Tories.

The survey also found that 32 percent of voters believe Corbyn is better-placed for premiership, which is two percent more than the support for Prime Minister Theresa May.

The poll came before May’s disastrous Conservative conference speech, which itself came at the end of a particularly lackluster party conference, characterized by a lack of enthusiasm from the crowd and continuing stories of infighting and disloyalty in the media.

The premier has struggled to unify Conservatives since June, when she led them to a disastrous parliamentary vote in which they lost their majority.

British media say May has suggested that a cabinet reshuffle is possible and that Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson could be replaced.

Divisions over the future of May were made public on Friday with a former chairman of her party saying 30 Conservative members of parliament backed a plot to topple her.

Grant Shapps, who chaired the Conservative Party between 2012 and 2015, said the premier’s leadership should now be challenged.

May’s authority was already diminished by her decision to call a snap election in June that lost her party its majority in parliament just days before the opening of Brexit talks with the European Union.

Many Conservative activists fear a leadership contest would exacerbate the divide in the party over Europe and pave the way for an election that some Tories worry could be won by Corbyn.

The embattled premier also faces pressure from the European Union where leaders in France and Germany signaled they would not allow Brexit talks to progress on to trade.
