Unknown militants in Afghanistan have attacked a police checkpoint in the country’s northern Baghlan Province, killing two officers and injuring another, police say.

The attack took place in the Dand-e Ghori area of the province, said Zabihullah Shuja, a spokesman for the police chief.

No one immediately took responsibility for the attack.

Separately, an Afghan official said that at least seven Taliban militants had been killed during a late Saturday airstrike in the northern Sari Pul Province.

Eleven militants were also wounded in the airstrike, which targeted a  training center belonging to the Taliban in Kohistanat district, said Nasratullah Jamshidi, a spokesman for the Army Corps in the northern region.

The US invaded Afghanistan 16 years ago to topple the then-Taliban regime. The group then launched a militancy against both foreign forces and the Afghan government and people.

Despite the presence of foreign forces, the Taliban is reportedly overrunning territory in the south and north of Afghanistan.

The Takfiri terrorist group of Daesh has also recently emerged in Afghanistan.

Back in 2014, the US-led occupying forces in Afghanistan officially announced the end of their combat operations in the country, saying they now had a mission to “train, advise, and assist” Afghan troops.

US President Donald Trump recently allowed the deployment of another 4,000 US troops in Afghanistan and has repeatedly urged other NATO members to contribute more.
