Imam Hussain was a 7th century revolutionary leader who led the Battle of Karbala against the corrupt government of tyrant of the time, Yazid, for the social justice of his people. He and his family members were martyred on the 10th day of Muharram over 1,400 years ago.
Muslims in Afghanistan, like other Islamic countries, hold large gatherings at the onset of the lunar month of Muharram to mourn the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein. However, the worsening security situation in Afghanistan in recent years has made it difficult and even dangerous for people to mark the occasion. As our correspondent Amin Alemi reports, these gatherings have become one of the main targets of terrorist groups like Daesh.
