Archaeologists working on the site of the ancient city of Chan Chan in Peru announced on Thursday (September 28) that they had found 4 wooden sculptures and an undisturbed tomb.
Archaeologists reported that the statues are around 70 centimeters (approx. 27.6 inches) long and wear funerary masks. One of the figures was of a male holding a cup at chest-height.
Chan Chan is a UNESCO World Heritage site located on the northern Peruvian coast close to the present-day city of Trujillo.
Chan Chan was the capital of the Chimu Kingdom and reached its height in the 15th Century before being conquered by the Incas.
