Iran’s Petrochimi Bandar Imam cruises into FIBA Asia Champions Cup quarters

Iranian professional basketball club Petrochimi Bandar Imam has booked a berth in the quarter-final round of the 2017 Fédération Internationale de Basket-ball (FIBA) Asia Champions Cup, recording an emphatic win over Chooks-to-Go Pilipinas of the Philippines.

On Tuesday, the Iranian team defeated the Philippine side 87-66 (16-14, 27-15, 18-16 and 26-21) in its last Group A fixture staged at the Chenzhou Olympic Sports Center Gymnasium in the south central Chinese city of Chenzhou.

Petrochimi Bandar Imam basketball team will take on Chinese Taipei’s Taipei Dacin Tigers on Thursday.

The 2017 FIBA Asia Champions Cup started in Chenzhou, China, on September 22 and will conclude on September 30.

Petrochimi Bandar Imam was been drawn in Pool A along with Kazakhstan’s BC Astana, Palestinian Sareyyet Ramallah, Chooks-to-Go Pilipinas of the Philippines, and Thailand's Mono Vampire.

Pool B consisted of Chinese China Kashgar, Chinese Taipei’s Taipei Dacin Tigers, Indian Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), Lebanon’s Al Riyadi and Shabab Al-Ahli Dubai of the United Arab Emirates.

The preliminary round of the tournament was played in a round robin format, with every team taking on its four opponents in its respective group.

The top four teams from each group advanced to the quarter-finals.

The winners of the quarter-finals will progress to the semi-finals, while the losing teams in the quarter-finals will play 5-8 classification games.

The FIBA Asia Champions Cup, previously known as the Asian Basketball Confederation (ABC) Champions Cup until 2002, is the Asian club championship for professional basketball. It is organized by FIBA Asia, and takes place once a year.
