Saudis intensifying crackdown on dissent ‘out of desperation’

Saudi Arabia has detained several prominent clerics who are considered to be outside the state-backed clerical circle. Salman al-Awdah and Awad al-Qarni were among those taken into custody over voicing political positions against Riyadh. Their arrests come as the Saudi establishment is experiencing major upheavals. Some even say the al Saud royal family is in the midst of a major crisis, and the intensification of the crackdown on dissent is taking place all out of desperation.

Russia's global anti-terror strategy appears to be paying off. A number of Malian lawmakers have signed a petition asking Russia for military help in fighting al-Qaeda-linked terrorists in the African nation's north.  Malians are apparently getting growingly disappointed with the UN peacekeepers and French troops deployed to their country to counter the threat of al-Qaeda as the security situation is highly volatile there.
