The United States is playing a geopolitical game against Russia and the recent row between the two countries goes against diplomacy, says a journalist.

“This (the seizure of Russian diplomatic posts) is about geopolitics and the Russians are appalled by this downward spiral in relations,” Fred Weir told Press TV on Wednesday.

Weir warned that “what [President Vladimir] Putin has signaled is that their next step would be to expel 155 American diplomats from Russia.”

US officials seized three Russian diplomatic posts in New York, Washington, DC, and San Francisco on September 2, after the White House ordered the occupants to leave within 48 hours.

The move came in retaliation for Moscow’s decision last month to significantly reduce American diplomatic staff in Russia.
