Pentagon chief James Mattis gives a pep talk to American soldiers serving outside the United States, urging them to “hold the line.”

The US defense secretary was seen speaking to US troops in an unknown location in a video published recently.

“Our country right now, it’s got problems we don’t have in the military,” Mattis said. “You just hold the line until our country gets back to understanding and respecting each other and showing it.”

This AFP file photo taken on August 13, 2017 shows demonstrators protesting against hate, white supremacy groups and US President Donald Trump in Chicago, Illinois.

He made the comments amid national turmoil following deadly violence at a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia.

The president has been under fire due to his failure to immediately condemn the recent tragedy, in which a driver plowed into demonstrators protesting against white supremacists, killing a young woman and injuring nearly 20 others.

Instead, he has blamed both sides for the clashes that took place on August 13.

The Pentagon chief, who has recently been to Jordan, Turkey and Ukraine, praised the soldiers’ “power of intimidation,” further lecturing them on “power of inspiration.”

“We’ve got the power of intimidation, and that’s you, if someone wants to screw with our families, our country and our allies,” Mattis said. “The power of inspiration - [and] we’ll get the power of inspiration back.”

Known as “Mad Dog,” the former general asserted that he came out of retirement to “serve alongside young people like you who are so selfless and, frankly, so rambunctious.”
