Bayern Munich have benefitted from a historic ‘video replay decision’ as they opened the Bundesliga season with a 3-1 victory against Bayer Leverkusen at a rain-soaked Allianz Arena.

The defending champions took an early lead when new signing Niklas Sule towered over everyone, to power home his first BundesLiga goal for the Bavarian giants in the 9th minute.

Corentin Tolisso, another new signing from French club Lyon, doubled the lead with a close-range header after the visitors failed to deal with a corner in the 18th minute.

After a heavy thunderstorm which led to the second half being delayed by about 15 minutes, Charles Aranguiz pulled Lewandowski back by his shoulder in the 52nd minute. The referee initially waved away claims for a penalty, but after consulting with video review, Bayern were awarded the spot-kick, which the Poland international confidently tucked home to make it 3-0.

In the 65th minute, the away side reduced the deficit when Admir Mehmedi lashed in a stunning 20 yard drive. But it wasn’t enough to stop Carlo Ancelotti's side, as they held on to the 3-1 score and began their new Bundesliga campaign with the victory.
