Iran volleyball team defeats Ukraine in preparation for Universiade

Iran’s Payame Noor University students’ volleyball team

Iranian volleyball players have defeated their Ukrainian counterparts as part of preparations for the 29th edition of Universiade in Chinese Taipei, which is going to open within hours.

On Thursday evening, the Payame Noor University outfit, which is representing the Islamic Republic of Iran in the tournament, sealed its win by seeing off Ukraine 3-1 (25-23, 23-25, 27-25 and 25-18) in a demonstration game played in Taipei.

“Iran has already had five full-team practices at training camp, and players are boosting their morale day by day. The training program has improved their muscular strength and today’s win can help Iran seek a place among the leading contenders for the trophy,” Abdolmahdi Nasirzadeh, manager of the Payame Noor University students’ volleyball team, said.

The 2017 Summer Universiade, which is the 29th edition of the international multi-sport event, will start in Taipei on August 19 and will finish on August 30.

Iran's Payame Noor University students’ volleyball team has been drawn in Pool D along with Argentina, Canada, Cyprus, Switzerland and the United Arab Emirates.

Brazil, Chinese Taipei, France, Japan and the United States are in Pool A. Latvia, Mexico, Portugal, South Korea and Ukraine are pitted against each other in Pool B.

Pool C consists of Australia, China, the Czech Republic, Hong Kong, Romania and Russia.
