Charlottesville violence

The US president has stopped short of criticizing the white supremacists who clashed with counter-demonstrators in the city of Charlottesville in the US state of Virginia.

Although Donald Trump called the unrest an egregious display of hatred, bigotry and violence, he did not specifically blame the far right for the violence. Rather, he took all sides involved in the unrest to task. In the meantime, Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe called on Trump to address the growing divisions in the United States.

Bahrain protest

In Bahrain, protesters have once again taken to the streets and clashed with regime forces to show their solidarity with prominent Shia cleric Ayatollah Issa Qassim.

The rally took place in the northern villages of Abu Saiba and Shakhura where demonstrators chanted slogans against the Al Khalifa regime. Regime forces fired tear gas at protesters. The protesters also condemned the violations against the cleric whose house is under siege by regime forces. Manama had issued an arrest warrant for Sheikh Qassim. The regime accused him of inciting violence. Bahrain has also revoked the spiritual leader’s citizenship. Human rights groups have condemned the Kingdom for heavily cracking down on pro-democracy activists since 2011.

Catalonia independence

In Spain, thousands of people have rallied in the city of San Sebastian in the Basque Country to support the upcoming Catalan independence vote. Pro-independence Basque leader Arnaldo Otegi was among the protesters.

Otegi has added that the protesters want a fairer society. In 2014, Catalonia held an unofficial referendum in which 80 percent of the voters supported independence. The new Catalonia referendum is scheduled for the beginning of October. Madrid is fiercely opposed to the vote, saying it violates the constitution. The pro-independence camp says it will press ahead with the vote after what it called failed efforts to engage Madrid.

Trump under fire

The US president has been criticized for his response to the violence in Charlottesville, Virginia that led to the death of three people. Trump condemned the unrest as an egregious display of hatred but failed to blame white supremacists for the violence.

Both Democrats and Republicans slammed Trump’s reaction, saying his statement lacked the moral clarity expected from the President of the United States. Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe also called on Trump to address the growing divisions in the United States.

Kenya post-election tensions

Post-election tensions in Kenya continue as conflicting reports on the number of the dead emerge.

The opposition put the death toll at more than 100 people. James Orengo, a senior member of the National Super Alliance opposition coalition, said there were children among the dead. Orengo accused Kenyan police of getting rid of bodies by hiding them in body bags. Meanwhile, the police announced a much smaller death toll; saying only 11 people had been killed by gunfire. The riot erupted after election results showed on Friday that Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta secured a second term in office.
