Iran U-23 beats China, ranks 5th in 2017 Asian Men's Volleyball Championship

The Iran men's national under-23 volleyball team has defeated China in its last encounter at the 2017 Asian Men's Volleyball Championship in Indonesia, and claimed the fifth spot at the conclusion of the continental tournament.

On Tuesday, the Iranian outfit, which had overcome Australia 3-2 (17–25, 18–25, 25–21, 25–19 and 16–14) the previous day, defeated the Chinese squad 3-1 (15-25, 25-17, 25-23, and 25-21) in a classification match for the fifth place of the competition at the Tri Dharma Petrokimia Gymnasium.

Iran had a poor start and simply lost the comfortable first set 15-25.

Iranians managed to establish themselves after the break, and Saeid Javaheri Tavana and Amin Esmaeilnejad both mounted a barrage of powerful cross-court attacks, successfully taking the edge off Chinese blocking attempts. Iran took the second set 25-17.

The win prompted Iranian basketball players to produce the goods, and made diverse attacks and blocks. China responded with strong mid-court attacks, but they could not match Iran’s amazing strength and power. Iran took the close third set 25-23.

The fourth set saw both sides vying for points from the very beginning, but Iran maintained its composure.

The Persians won the thrilling set 25-21, and secured the fifth place at the championship.

The 2017 Asian Men's Volleyball Championship was the 19th edition of the biennial international tournament organized by the Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC).

It opened in Gresik, Indonesia, on July 24, and ran through August 1, 2017.
