A gunman has opened fire on people at a nightclub in southern Germany, killing at least one person and wounding four others before being shot by police.

The 34-year-old attacker began shooting at the nightclub in the southern German city of Konstanz at around 0430 in the morning (0230 GMT) on Sunday.

One person was killed on the spot and three others were seriously wounded.

The attacker himself “was critically injured in a shootout with police officers as he left the disco, and later succumbed to his wounds in hospital,” police said in a statement later on Sunday.

“The motives of the man, who probably acted alone, are not known yet,” police added.

One officer was also injured in the exchange of fire.

The nightclub shooting came just two days after a knife attack took place in the northern port city of Hamburg. A 26-year-old killed one and injured six in the assault at a supermarket in Hamburg.

That attacker had been a radical known to intelligence agencies, which nevertheless failed to prevent him from carrying out the attack.
