US President Donald Trump has named John Kelly, Homeland Security secretary, as new White House chief of staff.

In a tweet on Friday, Trump said, "I am pleased to inform you that I have just named General/Secretary John F Kelly as White House Chief of Staff. He is a Great American."

“John has also done a spectacular job at Homeland Security. He has been a true star of my Administration.”

In the message, Trump also thanked Reince Priebus, who has so far held the post, saying, "We accomplished a lot together and I am proud of him.”

Priebus has been in a public feud with Anthony Scaramucci, Trump’s newly-appointed communications director.

On Wednesday, Scaramucci tweeted a message, accusing someone of disclosing a financial document. He tagged Priebus in the tweet, but later said he was not identifying him as the source.

Later, it was also revealed that he had told a magazine reporter that Priebus would be asked to resign.

Trump himself started targeting Priebus, 45, shortly after he took the post. The president has been constantly pressurizing Priebus, giving him several deadlines to get the White House in order.

According to the New York Times, Trump previously said he had lost faith in Priebus and that he had talked about wanting “a general” as chief of staff.

His press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Thursday that she did not know if Trump “has an opinion on what” should happen between Priebus and Scaramucci.

"I think the president as always enjoys healthy competition and conversation, and he sees that as such," she said.
