Strong quake breaches walls in southeast Iran
An earthquake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale has hit Iran’s southeastern province of Kerman, causing only material damage in two villages without casualties.
The tremor struck at around 10 p.m. local time on Sunday and its epicenter was placed about 12 kilometers of the village of Sirch at the depth of 10 kilometers.
Reza Fallah, CEO of the Iranian Red Crescent Society's Kerman Province, said the earthquake had left no casualties, adding that the situation was under control.
Meanwhile, Seyyed Hamid Jamaleddini, the society's spokesman, said seven relief teams had been dispatched to the quake-hit areas to assess the scale of the damage.
The quake caused some adobe walls to collapse in two villages and temporarily cut electricity supply, he said. Aid workers were on hand in Kerman’s nearby provinces of Yazd and Sistan and Baluchestan.
Additionally, two 2.7 and 2.8 magnitude aftershocks were recorded in Sirch with a third 1.9 magnitude one in the Kerman city of Golbaf.
