Iran basketball outfit beats Japan in 2017 William Jones Cup

The Iranian men’s national basketball B team has snatched a narrow victory at the 2017 William Jones Cup in Taiwan, overcoming the Japanese squad in the international tournament.

On Thursday, the Iranian sportsmen defeated their Japanese rivals 87-78 in a match played at Taipei Peace International Basketball Hall in New Taipei City.

The Iranian basketball players started the first quarter in a better fashion, and featured fine offense and defense to outscore the East Asian team 22-18.

The Japanese team then came from behind, and could regain the lead in the second quarter. They closed the quarter at 19-16.

The Iranian players were determined to be in the lead as the match went into the third quarter. They took the game to the wire, and eventually won the quarter 22-21.

In the final quarter, the Iranians mounted a series of attacks, and shot baskets to close it at 27-20.

The result came a day after Iranian basketball players had suffered a 71-105 defeat from Canada.

The Iranian men’s national basketball B team is scheduled to play against Iraq on Friday.

The 2017 William Jones Cup started in Taiwan on July 15 and will run until July 23. The event is a top-level international basketball tournament of Fédération Internationale de Basket-ball (FIBA) Asia.
