Republican, Democratic elite seeking to break Russia up: Analyst

Don DeBar

US President Donald Trump is faced with a “widespread opposition” organized by Republican and Democratic “elites” who are upset with his attempts to forge closer ties with Russia, says an American analyst.

Don DeBar, a New York-based political commentator and radio host, told Press TV on Sunday that anti-Trump rallies and other acts of protests against the new president were in fact an angry reaction that Democrats and liberals would have had to the election of any Republican into the White House.

On Saturday, anti-Trump rallies were held in at least 20 US cities, including Atlanta, New York City, New Jersey, Chicago, Phoenix, Washington, Boston, Portland and Los Angeles.

“The bulk of it is essentially Democratic Party voters, who are angry a Republican won, no matter who it would be,” he said, arguing that even former President Barack Obama and former secretary of state Hillary Clinton would have been treated the same way if they were Republicans.

“Generally, the party apparatus, the organizers, don’t organize this kind of widespread opposition to impair the ability of the president to act, which is what they have been attempting to do,” DeBar further argued.

The analyst said the elite in both parties have been aggressive in undermining Trump particularly because of his “rapprochement with Russia.”

“There is a broad segment of the elite here who want to pursue the policy that has been followed since the collapse of the Soviet Union, which is to loot Russia, to break up the Russian Federation and to enable the continued plundering of Russia’s economy, particularly its oil and gas,” he added.

During the presidential campaign, Trump promised to seek closer relations with Russian President Vladimir Putin and work with him to resolve critical global issues such as terrorism.

Ever since the beginning of his presidency, Trump and his associates have been under investigation for allegedly “colluding” with Russia and attempting to disrupt America’s democratic process.

“The real threat to Trump’s presidency is behind the scenes in the halls of power here and from the people who want to see aggressive US policy towards Russia, China, Iran and other enemies of the US capitalism,” DeBar concluded.
