Israel Syria strikes

Syria says Israeli airstrikes on Golan Heights have resulted in a number of civilian casualties.

According to the Syrian military, the bombing hit a residential building. The army said the strike was in support of militants. Earlier, Israel announced that it targeted Syrian military installations after shells landed in the occupied part of the Golan Heights. The attack came as clashes were underway between Syrian army and militants. Tel Aviv has targeted the region several times over the past few months. Syria says Israel and its Western and regional allies are aiding militant groups. Moreover, the Syrian army has repeatedly seized huge quantities of Israeli-made weapons and advanced military equipment from the foreign-backed militants inside Syria.

Ukraine fighting

Clashes in the east of Ukraine have taken the lives of two Ukrainian soldiers only a few hours after a new ceasefire between pro-Russian fighters and government troops went into force.

Ukraine’s military says two other soldiers have also been injured. The pro-Russia militia, however, claim that government forces have violated the truce several times. The warring sides have agreed to stop fighting so that farmers can harvest crops. The truce is set to last until the end of August. Fighting between government forces and pro-Russia fighters in the east has killed more than 10,000 people and displaced over a million since it began in 2014.

UK cyberattack

The UK parliament has temporarily restricted external access to e-mail accounts following a cyberattack.

A British parliament spokeswoman says authorities are investigating and discussing with the National Cyber Security Centre to protect and secure the House of Commons’ network. The developments come after the Wanna-Cry ransomware attack hit thousands of computers around the world last month. The global cyberattack targeted nearly 150 countries, shutting down significant services worldwide. The ransomware demanded payment to decrypt files it encrypted.

Germany anti-racism rally

Activists in Germany have held a rally in the capital Berlin against racism.

The rally marked the third anti-racism protest in Germany in the past several months. Earlier this year, a panel of United Nations experts accused Germany of discriminating against people of African descent and allowing widespread racial profiling by the government and security agencies. They warned that the situation remained largely invisible to wider society. The report said stop-and-search and controls by police were mostly targeting minority groups.

Yemen cholera outbreak

More than 200,000 people are suspected to have contracted cholera in an outbreak of the disease in Yemen.

That was announced by UNICEF and the World Health Organization, which called the epidemic the worst cholera outbreak in the world. They say an average of five-thousand new cases is added to the figure every day. The UN agencies say that more than 1,300 people have died, one quarter of them children, and that the death toll is rising day by day. The UN says collapsing health, water and sanitation systems have cut off 14.5 million people from regular access to clean water and sanitation, increasing the chances of the disease spreading.

Post-Daesh Mosul

As the Iraqi forces are near eradicating Daesh terrorists from the provincial capital of Nineveh Province, Mosul, residents living on the western side of the city are struggling with their sub-standard humanitarian conditions. The Iraqi army says although the liberation of the city is the ultimate goal, providing the deprived people of Mosul with aid is a major objective of its operation.

Failed fire safety checks

Britain says nearly three dozen high-rise apartment blocks have failed fire safety checks carried out after the recent deadly blaze that devoured a major tower in London.

According to UK officials, 34 out the 600 high-rise buildings across England on which tests were conducted failed the checks. Some 4,000 residents in north London were also told to vacate their apartments on Friday after the Fire Brigade ruled that their blocks were unsafe. Residents complained of the short notice to leave their homes. A fire engulfed the Grenfell social tower block in west London on June 14, killing nearly 80 people. It was the British capital's most deadly blaze since World War Two.
