Tomas Berdych has advanced to the quarterfinals of the Aegon Championships after overcoming Canada’s Denis Shapovalov in a tight three-set encounter.

Berdych was pushed all the way by the qualifier in the second round on Wednesday. The Czech won a first set tiebreaker 7-6, only for the second set to also go to a tiebreak, where, this time, Shapovalov won 6-7.

The third set also looked set to go to yet another tiebreaker but Berdych had a chance to wrap things up before the Canadian served in the 12th game to stay in the match.

Berdych then picked up break points and sealed the win with a 7-5, thanks to a powerful forehand from the baseline in 2 hours and 15 minutes.
