Scientists: Mega drought may return to Middle East

Scientists in Jordan have announced that a mega drought that devastated the Middle East thousands of years ago is set to return.

Researchers say evidence found inside bubbles trapped in salt below the Dead Sea predicts another mega drought heading for the area at some point during this century.

Geologists believe 80 percent of the Dead Sea's water vanished in the last mega drought and the same amount is already gone because of human activity. Ancient clues buried in mud, rock and salt just might help the scientists learn more about the future of the area.

Data shows rainfall in the region has fallen by 10-percent since 1950, and could continue to fall this century. Scientists’ findings have led them to believe that the water now used by people from the Dead Sea will likely disappear during the next mega drought; a phenomenon predicted to happen this century by climate models.
