Iran terror attacks arrests

Eight suspects have been apprehended in connection with Wednesday’s terrorist incidents in the Iranian capital, Tehran. According to officials, the eight were arrested in Alborz Province West of Tehran. The detainees stand accused of having provided logistical support for the terrorists involved in the June 7th attacks on the Imam Khomeini mausoleum and the Parliament building. Seventeen Iranian citizens were martyred and dozens wounded in the terror attacks. Five terrorists were also killed by security forces. The Daesh terrorist group has claimed responsibility for the attacks that have drawn worldwide condemnation.

Battle for Mosul

Iraqi forces battling to liberate Mosul from Daesh terrorists have taken full control of a major district in the western part of the city. Iraq’s Federal Police has announced the Zanjili district has been totally recaptured from the Takfiri terror group. Iraqi forces have found several rocket making factories in the newly liberated area. The territory held by Daesh in Mosul has now shrunk to just two districts. The Takfiri group maintains a presence in Medical City district and the densely populated Old City, on which Baghdad is advancing from different directions.

Israeli settlements

Israeli settlement activities have almost tripled in 2017 as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu continues to support new constructions in the occupied Palestinian territories. According to an Israeli NGO, Tel Aviv has advanced and approved plans for some 7,721 new homes in the occupied West Bank. The Peace Now Non-Governmental Organization also reports that more settlement planning will occur before the end of this year as Netanyahu and his minister of military affairs Avigdor Lieberman are pushing for more expansion. The NGO says, this week alone, over 3,000 new settler units have been authorized. The Israeli settlements are illegal under international law but Tel Aviv has numerously defied calls to half the expansion.

US Afghanistan airstrike

A US aircraft has mistakenly killed three Afghan policemen and injured two others during a mission in southern Afghanistan. US military officials say the policemen were killed in an overnight operation against the Taliban in Helmand province. Both Afghan and US officials said they were probing the incident. The Taliban have launched their spring offensive in several parts of Afghanistan. American military forces have intensified their operations in Afghanistan claiming to be targeting militants. However, US attacks have taken the lives of civilians and Afghan forces as well.

Amnesty Saudi accusation

A prominent international rights organization has accused Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates of playing with the lives of people in the region in the course of their dispute with neighboring Qatar. Amnesty International says a decision by the three Persian Gulf kingdoms to cut ties with Doha has led to the splitting up of families and destroying peoples’ livelihoods and education. According to the UK-based body, rights of dozens of people have been affected in the wake of the diplomatic row between the Saudi-led alliance and Qatar. Last week, Riyadh, Manama and Abu Dhabi cut their relations with Doha and ordered Qatari nationals to leave their territories while their own citizens are to return from Qatar within 14 days. The rights group has documented many cases of people cut off from parents, children and spouses as a result.

Qatar-Saudi Arabia crisis

Russia has called for dialog between Qatar and its Arab neighbors to ease the standoff between Doha and some regional states. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Moscow is unhappy with the current situation and is prepared to do everything in its power to help mediate the crisis. He made the remarks at a joint press conference after meeting with Qatari Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani in Moscow. Lavrov stressed the necessity of unity to battle terrorism. Earlier in the day, the Turkish president called for the lifting of the blockade on Qatar amid escalating tensions among Arab countries.

Britain petition

Britons have signed a petition against the prime minister’s decision to form a government with the DUP following her party’s loss in general elections. The petition gained almost 300,000 signatures in just 12 hours. It calls on Theresa May to resign citing her desperate attempts to stay in power. After the Tories lost parliamentary majority, May said she would seek to form a minority government by a confidence and supply agreement with the Northern Irish party. The DUP is under fire in the UK for its stances on abortion, climate change as well as alleged links with unionist terrorists.
