World number 1 Andy Murray has advanced to his 4th consecutive semi-finals after working hard to defeat Japanese 8th seed Kei Nishikori in 4 sets in the French Open.

Murray went down in the first set but responded by taking the second with ease and stormed through a third-set tie-break before finishing off a tiring Nishikori 2-6, 6-1, 7-6, 6-1.

Murray will next take on former champion Stan Wawrinka in a re-match of last year's semifinal, which Murray won.

Earlier, Wawrinka brushed aside Marin Cilic of Croatia 6-3, 6-3, 6-1 to make it into the next round. The 2015 title holder has not lost a set on his way to a 3rd successive semis in Paris.

The 32-year-old is the oldest man to reach the last 4 at Roland Garros, since Jimmy Connors in 1985.

Meanwhile, defending Champion Novak Djokovic has suffered a shock exit from the French Open after a straight sets defeat at the hands of Dominic Thiem.

The rising Austrian star beat the Serbian ace 7-6, 6-3, 6-love on Wednesday. The defeat means that Djokovic will slip to No.3 in the rankings next week.

This is the 1st time since 2010 that Djokovic has failed to reach among the last 4 at Roland Garros. As for Thiem, the victory was a dream-come-true and will go-on to face 9-time champion Rafa Nadal in the semis. And, he believes it's going to be the toughest match ever.em

Earlier in the day, World No.4 Rafael Nadal booked his place in the semis when his compatriot Pablo Carreno Busta retired during their last-8 clash on Wednesday.

The great Spaniard was leading 6-2, 2-love when Busta was forced to quit after just 51 minutes of play because of an abdominal injury.

This, we must remember, was the first time Busta had reached the quarters of a major after a fantastic clay-court season. With the win, Nadal has become just the 5th man in the Open era to reach 10 semi-finals at a Single Grand Slam.
