Here is a brief look at Press TV newsroom's headlines from 09:00 GMT to 17:00 GMT, June 7, 2017.
Tehran Terror Attacks
Gunmen have stormed Iran’s parliament and the mausoleum of Imam Khomeini in two bloody coordinated attacks claimed by Daesh. Four attackers armed with automatic rifles and pistols made their way into the parliament in Tehran, shooting indiscriminately. Unconfirmed reports suggest eight people, including a security guard, have been killed and dozens more injured. Security forces have managed to bring the situation under control, killing all the four gunmen. In another incident, four heavily-armed men burst into the shrine of Ayatollah Khomeini in the south of Tehran, killing at least one person. One attacker blew his explosives, but another one was gunned down before detonating hand grenades. Iran’s intelligence ministry says it has busted a third terrorist cell in Tehran.
Qatar under Pressure
The diplomatic rift between Qatar and a Saudi-led group of countries is widening, two days after the alliance cut ties with Doha over what they brand as support for extremist groups. Jordan has joined Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Bahrain, the UAE, Libya and Maldives, downgrading ties with Qatar. Amman has also revoked the Doha-based al-Jazeera TV channel’s license. In Bahrain, the interior ministry has banned citizens from traveling to Qatar or passing through it, threatening that their passports will be confiscated if they defy. The United Arab Emirates has banned people from publishing expressions of sympathy towards Qatar. It says offenders will receive a jail term of up to 15 years. Meanwhile, US president Donald Trump has sided with the Saudi-led alliance, saying the breakdown of ties with Qatar would end what he called the horror of terrorism.
Vulnerable UK
A new poll reveals that an overwhelming majority of Britons believe Britain's involvement in foreign wars has put the public at greater risk of terrorism. According to the poll ordered and published by Independent, 75 percent of people say interventions in Iraq, Afghanistan and Libya have made atrocities on the UK soil more likely. The poll also supports opposition Leader’s statements suggesting that foreign policy decisions are linked to terrorism in the UK. The new poll’s results come just one day before the general elections in the country. Saturday’s deadly attacks in London have led to security dominating the final days of the election campaign in Britain.
Condemning Tehran Attacks
Russia has condemned the deadly attacks in the Iranian capital Tehran. The Kremlin spokesman says Moscow decisively condemns such terrorist attacks. Russia called for greater coordination in the fight against the Daesh terrorist group. It says the continuation of a series of terror attacks underlines the need for coordinated actions in the fight against terror. The European Union's foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini has also expressed solidarity with the Iranian people following the acts of terror in Tehran. Mogherini said today is a very sad day. The Socialists and Democrats Group in the European Parliament have strongly condemned the attacks as well. The group said terrorism knows no boundaries and the fight against it requires unity.
Slamming US Policies
Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council has blamed US officials' visits to the region as the main cause of division among regional countries. Ali Shamkhani says the region witnessed division and the strengthening of terrorist groups after these visits. He added that as a result, more weapons are being sold and the economic cycle of terrorism has been emboldened by the US. The senior Iranian security official says Iran and Russia have managed to effectively change the regional security equation against the terrorists, citing the liberation of Aleppo and reaching a ceasefire deal. Shamkhani made the remarks in a meeting with senior Russian diplomat, Alexander Lavrentiev. The Russian envoy said Moscow and Tehran agree on most issues regarding Syria and their cooperation has helped regional and global security.
Syria US Warning
The Syrian army and its allies have warned the alliance has the capacity to strike US positions in Syria. This, a day after US warplanes targeted pro-Syria troops near the country’s border with Jordan and Iraq. The commander of the operations room of the forces allied to Syria issued a statement saying its self-restraint will end if the US crosses the red line. The statement added different missile and military systems are available to the alliance to attack US positions in Syria. Meanwhile, Russia has condemned the US-led coalition's Tuesday attack on the Syrian army. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov called it an act of aggression that breaches Syria’s sovereignty. US warplanes hit the Syrian army and allied forces who were approaching the al-Tanf base in the southern Homs province. This is the second time in less than a month that the US hits pro-Syrian government forces in the area.
Iran Fight against Terror
Iranian President Hassan Rouhani says the attacks in Tehran will make Iran more united and determined in the fight against terrorism. Rouhani offered condolences to the victims' families. He promised that Iran’s security apparatus will not stop until they find out about all the dimensions of the attacks and find those who were behind the terrorists. The president says Tehran will prove once again that it will crush the enemies’ plots through more unity and strength. He stressed terrorism is a global problem and unity to fight extremism and violence within regional and international cooperation is the most important need of today’s world.
