Russia’s military moves

The US deployment of the THAAD missile system in Korea has agitated more than just North Korea. Even within the host country and ally of the US, South Korea, the new president, Moon Jae-in, has been surprised to find unannounced units of the THAAD system within his jurisdiction. But joining the protest against the US anti-ICBM program are Russia and China, both of whom oppose the system for very legitimate reasons. China argues that the THAAD system will contradict its own counter strike capabilities, and Russian President Vladimir Putin has raised broader concerns over the activities of the US as a whole.


 

UAE-Saudi rift on Yemen

There are now growing signs of division between the Saudis and their allies on the ground in Yemen. UAE-backed forces have engaged in open fighting with those supported by the Saudis in the port city of Aden. The confrontation erupted over control of the airport in the southern port city of Aden. Forces backed by the United Arab Emirates seized the airport from the Saudi backed side. The fighting left casualties among soldiers guarding the airport. The development raised tensions between the UAE and former president Hadi who unleashed the Saudi war machine on his own country hoping to regain power.
