Sources close to President Donald Trump say the US president has been “down in the dumps” since he returned to the White House from his first foreign trip.

The sources, which were not named in reports, told CNN on Tuesday that Trump had complained about his foreign tour for being too long and the president had been "in a pretty glum mood" when he left.

"He now lives within himself, which is a dangerous place for Donald Trump to be," one source said. "I see him emotionally withdrawing. He's gained weight. He doesn't have anybody whom he trusts."

Another source said the businessman-turned-politician returned home “lonely, angry and not happy with much of anyone,” discovering that presidency was not an easy or natural fit.

Trump's first official tour abroad took him to Saudi Arabia, Israeli-occupied territories, Belgium and Italy.

Trump is back home as the controversy over Russian interference in the 2016 election campaign continues, with his son-in-law and senior adviser Jared Kushner now part of the counter-intelligence investigation.

The controversy surrounding the Russia links gained added momentum after Trump sacked FBI Director James Comey earlier this month, leading to allegations by critics that the president sought to hamper the agency's probe into the issue.

Moscow has denied US intelligence agencies' conclusion that it meddled in the campaign to try to tilt the election in Trump's favor. The president has denied any collusion, repeatedly denouncing the probes as an effort by Democrats to explain Hillary Clinton's upset defeat in the election.
