Welcoming Rouhani's re-election

Congratulatory messages are pouring in from outside Iran for Hassan Rouhani who has clinched the country’s presidency for a second straight term.

European Union Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini on her twitter page congratulated Rouhani on his election victory. She stressed the EU’s readiness to carry on with the full implementation of the Iran nuclear deal. British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson also congratulated Rouhani on his victory, calling on Iran’s president to continue cooperation with the international community. Meanwhile Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin have congratulated Rouhani on his victory.

Yemen resilience

Yemeni protesters have poured into the streets of the capital Sana'a to denounce the US and Saudi Arabia over two years of death and destruction brought on their war-ravaged country. They also hailed the ballistic missile attack launched by the Yemeni forces against Riyadh just hours before the arrival of US President Donald Trump in the Saudi capital. Trump is visiting Riyadh, as the first stop of his maiden international tour.

Brexit's big loser

The foreign policy chief of the European Union says the U-K will be harmed more than any other European country after it leaves the bloc.

Federica Mogherini says the remaining 27 EU members have made their demands clear to the UK government, particularly those relating to the rights of EU citizens who live in Britain. More than three million EU citizens live in Britain and it is not clear how Brexit will affect their lives. The divorce talks will begin after the UK's snap elections on June 8. Prime Minister Theresa May has accused EU officials of trying to interfere in the vote. Britain has less than two years to negotiate the terms of the exit before it comes into effect in March 2019.

Bahrain's rage

Thousands of people have taken to the streets across Bahrain in protest against the trial of prominent cleric Sheikh Isa Qassim on Sunday.

Protesters carried posters of Sheikh Qassim and chanted slogans demanding that the Manama regime end its persecution of the cleric. In the northwestern village of Diraz, the cleric’s home town, demonstrators chanted they were ready to sacrifice their lives for the cleric. Reports and pictures uploaded on social media appear to show regime forces firing tear gas at protesters in the northern village of Karbabad. Last June, the Kingdom stripped Sheikh Qassim, who is the spiritual leader of the Persian Gulf country’s majority Shia population, of his nationality. Manama accuses the cleric of promoting violence. The Cleric, who faces a 15-year sentence if convicted, denies the accusations.

Chibok girls meet parents

The 82 Chibok school girls recently freed from Boko Haram captivity in Nigeria have met their parents for the first time in three years since their abduction.

US spying

China has reportedly dealt a serious blow to US spy agency, the CIA. Beijing is said to have killed or imprisoned nearly two dozen U-S spies between 2010 and 2012.

In a report, the New York Times quoted 10 American officials who described the intelligence breach as the worst in decades. The officials are unsure whether a mole within the CIA has leaked information to the Chinese or they themselves hacked into the data. China is known to have a strong intelligence system, making it hard for foreign agents to operate in the country. The New York Times says former US President Barack Obama was critical of the sluggish flow of information from China.

Taliban deadly attack

Coordinated attacks on security outposts in southern Afghanistan have killed at least 20 police officers. Taliban militants have claimed responsibility for the assaults.

Local officials said the militants used heavy weaponry during the raids in Zabul province. The attacks also left at least 15 people injured. The militant group has dramatically increased its raids and bombings across Afghanistan since April as part of what it calls the spring offensive. They conducted one of their deadliest raids on a military base in the northern city of Mazar-i-Sharif last month. It left at least 135 security forces dead.
