A new opinion poll shows US president Donald Trump continues to suffer the lowest approval rating among any modern American president in their first four months in office.
A new Politico/Morning Consult poll released on Wednesday showed that only 42 percent of Americans approved of Trump’s performance as president. Also only half of the registered voters disproved of Trump’s job.
This is slightly higher than early May, when the figure had plunged to 46 percent, a record low for any US president during their first months in office.
The White House has been roiled by controversy following’s Trump’s decision to fire the FBI chief, James Comey, who was overseeing two important probes that shaped the Republican president’s last year victory against his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton.
After the election, he began investigating Trump’s alleged ties to Russia as well as a series of cyber-attacks against Clinton’s campaign, which Democrats claimed were conducted by Russian hackers.
The Trump administration found itself in more trouble on Monday night, when The Washington Post claimed in a report that the president shared classified information with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Russia's ambassador to the US, Sergei Kislyak, during a White House meeting last week.
This is while on Wednesday, a survey released by the Democratic firm Public Policy Polling showed that 48 percent of the respondents would support Trump's impeachment, while only 41 percent would opposed it.
At least 12 congressional democrats have called for Trump's impeachment since he took office in January.
Additionally, US Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said on Tuesday that Trump’s intelligence sharing with Russians had exposed Americans to a “greater risk,” and the president had to provide Congress with a transcript of his meeting with top Russian officials after he reportedly discussed highly classified information.
Still, 79 percent of Republicans overall approve of the job the president is doing and just 16 percent disapprove.
