Iranians awarded 7 more medals in Islamic Solidarity Games

Iranian sportsmen and women have continued to demonstrate praiseworthy athletic skills and strength at the ongoing 4th edition of Islamic Solidarity Games in Azerbaijan, and collected seven more medals to raise the Islamic Republic’s total medal count to 24 at the international event.

On Monday, the 20-year-old 2014 Asian Games gold medalist Najmeh Khedmati proved her class in the final of women's 50m rifle 3 positions at the Baku Shooting Center in the Azerbaijani capital city of Baku, and recorded an impressive score of 454.7 points.

He compatriot Elaheh Ahmadi marked 451.6 points to receive the silver.

Mahlagha Jambozorg, another female sports shooter from Iran, won the bronze medal with a final score of 441.2.

“Words can't describe how I feel. I had undergone thorough training and could become champion at last,” Khedmati said while shedding tears of joy.

Moreover, Iran’s Mohammad Ahmadi finished in the third place at the end of men's 50m pistol contests with 200.9 points.

Yusuf Dikec, a representative from Turkey, accumulated 223 points to claim the top position and clinch the gold.

Ismail al-Abri from Oman received the silver medal, having earned 220.8 points overall.

Iran’s artistic gymnasts also claimed a bronze and silver medal in the Islamic Solidarity Games on Monday.

Hadi Khanarinejad won the bronze medal in men’s rings, having tallied 13.85 points. The gold medal went to Turkish contestant Ibrahim Colak with 15.25 points, and Azerbaijan’s Bence Talas recorded 14.50 points to seize the silver.

Saeedreza Keikha also notched 14.20 points in the men's pommel horse and won a silver medal.

Talas racked up 14.25 points and was awarded the gold medal. Ahmed Aldyani from Qatar claimed the bronze in the event with 13.60 points.

Separately, Iranian weightlifter Majid Asgari participated in the men's 69-kilogram class at the Weightlifting Arena, and finished the competition tied on an aggregate of 316 kilograms.

Turkish and Uzbek competitors Daniyar Imayilov and Doston Yokubov landed in the second and third overall slots with 323 and 314 kilograms respectively.

The 4th Islamic Solidarity Games started in Baku, Azerbaijan, on May 12 under the motto “Solidarity is Our Strength.” The tournament will wrap up on May 22, 2017.

Athletes from 54 Muslim countries around the world are representing their nations over 10 days of competition across 20 different sports, which include 23 disciplines (athletics and para-athletics, aquatics – diving, aquatics – swimming, aquatics – water polo, basketball 3×3, football, gymnastics – artistic, gymnastics – rhythmic, wushu, table tennis, handball, judo and blind judo, wrestling – Greco, wrestling – freestyle, shooting, tennis, volleyball, boxing, zurkhaneh, karate, taekwondo and weightlifting) in 16 world-class sporting venues.

Turkey is on the top of the medal count table with 92 medals (35 gold, 31 silvers and 26 bronzes).

Azerbaijan has claimed the second spot with 68 medals (33 gold, 23 silvers, 12 bronzes), while Uzbekistan is on the third with a total of 30 medals (six gold, six silvers and 18 bronzes).

Indonesia, the Islamic Republic of Iran, Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Turkmenistan and Qatar have earned the 4th to 10th places respectively.
