Iranian wrestlers pocket 4 medals in Senior Asian Championships

Iranian freestyle wrestlers have exhibited convincing performances at the Asian Senior Wrestling Championships in India, and scooped four medals for the Islamic Republic at the continental tournament.

Reza Ahmadali Atrinagharchi overcame Uzbekistan’s Makhmudjon Shavkatov 8-6 in his first contest of the 57-kilogram weight class in the Indian capital city of New Delhi on Saturday.

He, however, lost to Japanese opponent Yuki Takahashi 2-5 in the next round. The Iranian wrestler then overwhelmed Pinai Nuyson 6-0 by technical fall, and got the chance to feature in the repechage round.

Atrinagharchi defeated Sunggwon Kim from South Korea 5-4 and won the bronze.

Meisam Abolfazl Nasiri picked up another bronze medal for the Iranian freestyle wrestling team in the 65-kilogram division.

Later in the tournament, Iranian freestyle wrestler Bahman Mohammad Teymouri defeated Tsubasa Asai from Japan 10-0 by technical fall, and received a bronze medal in the 74-kilogram weight category.

Moreover, Hossein Lotfali Shahbazigazvar lost 4-6 to Uzbek opponent Magomed Idrisovitch Ibragimov, and pocketed a silver medal for Iran in the 97-kilogram class.

The Asian Senior Wrestling Championships kicked off in New Delhi on May 10, and will run through May 14.

The tournament has brought together dozens of male and female freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestlers from various Asian countries, including China, Chinese Taipei, India, the Islamic Republic of Iran, Japan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, North Korea, South Korea, Tajikistan, Thailand and Uzbekistan.
