Iran’s Final Presidential Debate

The third and final televised presidential debate has been held in Iran, with the topic of economy. The six candidates vying for the 12th presidential election took to the podium based on the lots drawn to further elaborate on their plans to boost economic growth. During the debate, the candidates questioned each other’s agendas for enhancing the economy and job creation. The incumbent president defended his performance saying it’s stabilized the economy over the past four years. Last week, the candidates discussed domestic and foreign policy as well as cultural issues. Iranians will be heading to the polls on May 19 to elect their next president.

Trump’s Comey Warning

US President Donald Trump has warned former FBI chief James Comey against leaking to the media, suggesting that there might be tapes of their conversations. In a tweet, Trump threatened to cancel media briefings saying Comey better hope that there are no tapes of conversations. Trump fired Comey on Tuesday, later saying that he was not doing a good job. In the termination letter, the president however thanked the former FBI director for personally informing him that he was not under investigation over Russia ties. Trump’s argument was in contradiction with the White House’s explanations for the firing of Comey. Initially, the White House cited a Justice Department memo as the impetus for the decision. Meanwhile, the US president has once again rejected reports about collusion between his election campaign and the Russian government as fabrication by “fake media and democratic opponents.”

Pakistan Bomb Blast

United Nations’ experts have called New Delhi’s ban on social networking in Indian-controlled Kashmir a collective punishment. They urged India to revoke the ban and allow free speech in the disputed region. The ban was imposed last month after mass demonstrations by students against an Indian army raid on a college in southern Kashmir. The protests continue unabated as the protesting students seek freedom from Indian rule. Our correspondent, Shahana Butt, reports.
