Iran men's national football team, domestically known as Team Melli, has kept its position as the best Asian squad in the latest edition of Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) rankings, and stayed put in the world’s 28th spot.

According to the latest monthly rankings released by the world’s soccer governing body on Thursday, Team Melli garnered 820 points and held the title as the top soccer outfit in Asia.

Other Asian teams included South Korea, which upheld its position and claimed the 43rd slot in the latest FIFA rankings with 700 points. The Taegeuk Warriors were followed by the Japanese Samurai Blue and Australia’s Socceroos, who accumulated 685 and 661 points respectively to sit in the 44th and 50th spots.

Brazil remains the top-ranked soccer team in the world, with 1,672 points.

Argentina earned 1,603 points to sit in the second position while third-place Germany racked up 1,464 points. Chile stands fourth with 1,411 points.

On March 28, the Iran men’s national soccer team recorded a deserved victory in the third round of the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualification tournament, defeating China in a home game.

The Iranian squad celebrated a 1-0 win over Team Dragon at the end of a Group A fixture in Tehran’s Azadi Stadium.

Mehdi Taremi, who plays as a forward for Persian Gulf Pro League club Persepolis, scored the only goal of the game just seconds after the start of the second half, when his low shot from eight yards out slipped under the Chinese goalkeeper.

The final result gave Carlos Queiroz’s men their fifth win in seven games.
