Countdown begins for 2nd presidential TV debate

Countdown has begun for the second televised presidential debate in Iran.

The six candidates contesting the vote will face off in the debate to further elaborate on their agendas. The topic of the debate is domestic and foreign policy as well as cultural issues. The debate will be held on Friday at around 1200 GMT and will be aired live on press TV. The first debate was held last week and candidates clashed over socio-economic issues.

Opinion poll shows high turnout in presidential election

An opinion poll in Iran shows that more than 63 percent of the eligible voters will cast their ballots in the May 19 presidential election.

The poll was conducted by the Research Center for the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting on a sample of 38,000 people. More than seven percent of the respondents said they will probably take part in the election while over 23 percent said they will not turn out at polling stations on Election Day. This comes as more than four percent of the respondents were undecided on the issue. The poll was conducted in the Iranian capital Tehran and other provincial capitals as well as in 10 villages from May 1 to May 3.

Rouhani defends his policies in TV interview

Iran’s incumbent President Hassan Rouhani, who is seeking re-election in the May 19 vote, has in a live TV interview defended his administration’s performance and policies. Rouhani also outlined his plans to boost Iran’s economy and defense capabilities.

Qalibaf puts economy at the top of his agenda

Presidential candidates are campaigning on different platforms. Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf has put economy at the top of his agenda and promised to bring about change.

Hossein Fattahi talks about party's final candidate

Meanwhile, the campaign manager of Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf in Kerman says either him or Ebrahim Raeisi will withdraw from the presidential race.

Hossein Fattahi said the selection will be based on a survey that determines the popularity of each candidate. He stressed that both of the presidential hopefuls are from the Popular Front of Islamic Revolution Forces and it is in the best interest of the party that only one of them remains in the race. The remarks come as earlier a spokesman for the party said both nominees are there to stay until the election.
