Qintong boat festival opens in China's Jiangsu

Qintong boat festival in China’s eastern province of Jiangsu.

China’s eastern ‘Jiangsu’ province has hosted an annual boat festival. The event has attracted more than 400 decorative boats.

The ‘Qintong’ fiesta attracts over 300,000 viewers from nearby villages and towns every year. They gather along the bank, cheering for the participants who stand on colorfully-decorated punts, canoes, and flowery boats.

The traditional gathering dates back over 800 years when villagers boated on rivers to honor soldiers who fought in wars against enemies.

Local officials encourage youngsters to engage in the folk activities. The festival has been listed as a state-level intangible cultural heritage.
