Trump says Rice committed crime, vows to procure evidence
US President Donald Trump says former national security adviser Susan E. Rice has committed a crime by spying on his associates.
The Republican made the accusation against the former Obama administration official in a New York Times interview conducted in the Oval Office of the White House on Wednesday.
Rice (pictured below) has previously claimed that it is not uncommon to request the identity of Americans caught in surveillance of foreigners by the US spy agencies.
When asked if Rice’s measure amounts to crime, Trump asserted that “Do I think? Yes, I think.”
“I think it’s going to be the biggest story,” stated the former businessman. “It’s such an important story for our country and the world. It is one of the big stories of our time.”
The new president, who has a history of throwing accusations without evidence, vowed to procure evidence “at the right time.”
Rice, meanwhile, has denied accusations that she was trying to “unmask” the Trump campaign officials.
"The allegation is that somehow the Obama administration officials utilized intelligence for political purposes," she told MSNBC on Tuesday. "That's absolutely false."
"There were occasions when I would receive a report in which a U.S. person was referred to, name not provided, just a US person, and sometimes in that context in order to understand the importance of that report, and assess its significance, it was necessary to find out or request the information as to who that US official was," she added.
Trump had previously claimed that former President Barack Obama wiretapped his Manhattan tower in the run-up to the 2016 presidential election, an allegation later dismissed by FBI Director James Comey.
