Iran falls to Myanmar in 2018 AFC Women’s Asian Cup qualification
The Iran women's national football team has started its campaign at the 2018 Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Women's Asian Cup qualification tournament with a bitter defeat against Myanmar.
On Monday, the Iranian outfit conceded a 0-2 loss to the Southeast Asian side at end of its Group D opener at Vietnam Youth Football Training Centre in the Vietnamese capital city of Hanoi.
The Iranians fell behind in the opening minutes of the fixture as the Myanmar team got off to a sound start, and managed to take an early lead. Striker July Kyaw was on target in the fourth minute.
The Iranian squad mounted stiff resistance and vigorously pursued an equalizer afterwards, which created problems for the Myanmar’s defense.
Despite Iran’s cool composure and continued search to unlock openings, Myanmar found a second goal in the third and final minute of the first half stoppage time.
Win Theingi Tun doubled her team’s lead from close range after Iran had failed to clear a loose ball.
Iran’s best chances fell to midfielder Zahra Ghanbari. She found herself on the end of a series of neatly constructed moves, and she came closest to narrowing the deficit.
Her bullet header went narrowly wide of Mya Phu Ngon’s goal though, with eight minutes remaining.
The Iran women's national football team will seek to bounce back from the defeat on Wednesday, when it faces Singapore.
Iran is drawn with Myanmar, Singapore, Syria and Vietnam in Group D of the 2018 AFC Women's Asian Cup qualification tournament.
Group A consists of Bahrain, Iraq, Jordan, the Philippines, Tajikistan and the United Arab Emirates.
Hong Kong, India, North Korea, South Korea and Uzbekistan form Group B.
Chinese Taipei, Guam, Lebanon, Palestine and Thailand are pitted against each other in Group C.
