China uses facial recognition to curb toilet paper theft

Facial recognition software installed in Beijing public bathroom at Beijing's Temple of Heaven park to crack down on people taking large amounts of toilet paper.

Authorities at one of Beijing’s most famous tourist sites have installed facial recognition dispensers to tackle toilet paper theft.

Visitors to the Temple of Heaven park are now required to conduct a full facial scan before receiving a strip of toilet paper.

The newly installed dispensers give visitors exactly 60 centimeters of toilet paper. The facial recognition software is designed to prevent the same person from receiving more toilet paper within nine minutes of their first scan.

As a result, toilet paper use is reportedly down from 20 rolls in three days to four. The UNESCO world heritage site has been experiencing toilet paper theft since 2007.
