GM foods have made their ways into Iran; however, like some other countries which have banned the use of these products, Iranian authorities are supporting organic foods against GM ones.

With regard to the growth of population in the world, production of GM foods have seen a considerable hike inasmuch as Iran like others have started harvesting GM products. This is at a time though many opposing voices have risen against it recently arguing that GM foods cause many diseases. There are some scientists that don't believe in such claims. Many sciences and industry leaders argue GM foods are actually good for us and there has been no serious case to prove otherwise. They believe the benefits of GM crops have outweighed the potential health risks, which so far remain theoretical.

There are many voices for and against genetically modifying foods in the world and Iran is not an exception. Critics believe GM foods not only have lesser nutritional values but also cause many diseases; however, no one has ever provided a proof positive that for example this especial kind of GM food causes that especial disease. Monsanto is the biggest company specialized in genetically modifying foods worldwide.

One of the most controversial activities of this company which has strongly affected people, especially farmers, is the production of unproductive seeds. Many believe that this company's genetically modified products have caused many diseases so far although scientists have not reached a consensus on this matter yet. A number of scientists believe that companies such as Monsanto bribe some scientists to keep silent about the harmful effects of GM products. Vandana Shiva, the Indian environmental activist, believes that GMO products have caused a 10-fold increase in autism among American children. 19 countries have banned the use and harvest of GM products in their courtiers and Iran has started taking actions against it as well. Prohibition of GM productions has been brought up in the Iranian Parliament and it will be hopefully passed soon.
