Iran beaten in behind-closed-doors friendly against Iraq

Iran men’s national football team, domestically known as Team Melli, has gone down to a narrow defeat at the end of a behind-closed-doors friendly match held in the Iranian capital city of Tehran.

Team Melli conceded a 0-1 defeat to Lions of Mesopotamia at Azadi Stadium in western Tehran on Saturday.

An Iraqi striker found the back of the net from the penalty spot in the 72nd minute.

The Iran men’s national football team is preparing for its Group A match against Qatar in the third round of the 2018 Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) World Cup qualification tournament on March 23.

The game will be start at the multi-purpose Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium in the Qatari capital city of Doha at 7 p.m. local time (1600 GMT)

Team Melli will take on the Chinese national football team, nicknamed Team Dragon, at Tehran’s Azadi Stadium at 4:30 p.m. local time (1230 GMT) five days later.
