Israel shares interests with Syria terrorists: Iran

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi

Iran has strongly condemned Israel’s recent airstrikes in Syrian territory, saying that the raids show how Tel Aviv’s interests are intertwined with those of the terrorists operating in Syria.

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi said the Friday Israeli strikes against targets near the central Syria city of Palmyra had taken place “at a time when [the Syrian] army and the anti-terror front have the upper hand against bloodthirsty terrorists, driving them back from cities and villages one after another.”

That, he said, indicated the overlap of interests between Israel and the terrorists in Syria.

Qassemi called on the United Nations (UN) to denounce the aggression and use whatever in its power to prevent the repeat of such “acts of violation of peace and security by the aggressive and rogue Zionist regime (Israel).”

Following the Friday airstrikes, Russia summoned the Israeli ambassador to Moscow, Gary Koren, for clarification over the raids. The Russian military has carrying out an aerial campaign in Syria in support of the Syrian government.

The air raids came less than three weeks after the Syrian military, covered by Russian air power, rid Palmyra of Daesh’s presence for a second time.

On Saturday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the attacks had been aimed at Hezbollah targets, adding defiantly that his regime would continue to conduct military attacks against the Lebanese resistance movement in Syria.

Hezbollah defended Lebanon against Israeli wars in 2000 and 2006. It has helped both prevent and contain the spillover into Lebanon of a terrorist campaign going on in Syria. The resistance movement has also been aiding the Syrian government in its own battle against extremist militants inside Syria.

Israel, on the other hand, has been contributing to the terrorist campaign in Syria with the strikes against Hezbollah and the Syrian military and by offering medical treatment for the anti-Damascus militants in the Israeli-occupied Syrian territory of Golan Heights.
