The face of a bombing in Kabul

Tarana Akbari

Ashoora, the 10th of Muharram, the first month of the lunar calendar, corresponds to the 6th of December 2011. It is one of the holiest days in the Shia calendar. A large number of people have participated in the ceremony of Ashoora. One suicide bomber is sitting among the Kabuli mourners of Imam Hussein in Abul Fazl shrine. This Ashoora ceremony is ruined by the blast of a bomb. The scattered pieces of shrapnel have injured a lot of men, women and children.

Tarana Akbari, the 12 year-old Afghan girl in a green outfit specifically worn for this ceremony, will become an eye witness to this tragedy. In a split second she will watch her brother, family and friends die. Masoud Hossaini, the photographer, says: "Tarana wouldn’t stop screaming for quite some time.” 70 people were killed in this explosion, 7 were Tarana's family.
