New helmet device speeds up treatment for stroke patients

A new helmet device could help doctors accurately diagnose the type of stroke of their patient.

Researchers have tested a new helmet device to help doctors correctly diagnose the type of stroke and treat their patient very fast.

Doctors in Australia say the new helmet works by emitting a very low level of microwave radiation to detect bleeding patterns in the brain.

Without the helmet, the patient has to wait until they reach hospital to get a scan. Medics believe treating a stroke with anti-clotting agents can be disastrous if the stroke is caused by bleeding.

The device will be first trailed in new South Wales emergency departments then rolled out to ambulances next year.
