Top US Democrats have called on Attorney General Jeff Sessions to resign for hiding his contacts with Russia, raising a new challenge for President Donald Trump.

Brian Becker, a member of the ANSWER Coalition, believes the scandal over contacts between Russia and members of the Trump administration is “the intensification of an already existing witch hunt.”

“We have seen for the past year that the Democratic party, but big parts of the Republican party too, have engaged in a complete witch hunt against Russia, blaming all things on Russia and making it seem almost as if someone participating in discussions with Russian officials … somehow makes you in league with Russia. In other words, you are tainted, you are guilty by association or by interaction with Russia,” the analyst told Press TV in an interview on Friday.

He also opined that "this is about Washington consensus that has existed for some time which is to treat Russia as the number one enemy of the United States."

Becker also maintained that the Democratic party "is blaming the Russians for their own humiliating defeat in the 2016 election," adding that they are trying to "struggle" against Trump by tainting his cabinet as “agents of Russia.”

He further stated it is “despicable” and “unconscionable” that the problem with Sessions according to the Democratic party is not "racism" and "his bias against immigrants" but rather the fact that "he has talked to the Russians."

According to the analyst, Washington needs enemies to justify the increase of its military spending and the political system is "antagonizing" Russia, China and Iran to this end.
