Trump's pronouncements are not permanent nor stable: Analyst

US President Donald Trump’s pronouncements on seeking to end UN rights council’s obsession with Israel is not a promising initiative on his part, says a professor

US President Donald Trump is increasing pressure on the United Nations as a way to dictate the policies of the White House over the international body and serve Israel’s interests, an American writer and retired professor says.

“He wants to strengthen the role of the US within UN in order to be able to effectively dictate the policies of the UN, and in particular the Human rights committee in the UN, in order to protect and direct the UN to support Israel,” said James Petras, who has written several books on Middle Eastern political issues.

“This is not a very promising initiative on the Part of Trump,” Petras told Press TV on Wednesday.

Petras said that Trump’s positions are not stable and he frequently changes his policy based on the pressures he receives.

Trump is considering withdrawing the United States from the UN Human Rights Council, which the new administration accuses of being biased against Israel, according to a report by POLITICO, citing informed sources.

In a speech on Wednesday before the Geneva-based UNHRC, US envoy Erin Barclay said Washington "remains deeply troubled by the Council’s consistent unfair and unbalanced focus on…Israel."

"The obsession with Israel...is the largest threat to this council's credibility," said Barclay. Israel is “regularly subjected to unfair, unbalanced and unfounded bias."

Trump has vowed to improve US-Israel ties that were often strained over illegal settlement activities during the administration of former President Barack Obama.

Trump has also promised to move the US Embassy in Israel to Jerusalem al-Quds, a step that would enrage Palestinians and create an international furor.

In December, the Obama administration allowed the UN Security Council to adopt a resolution which demanded an immediate end to Israel’s settlement activities.

Every US president since Jimmy Carter has taken the position that Israeli settlements in occupied Palestinian territories are "illegitimate" under international law.
