Spaniards hold ancient spring carnival

Locals take part in the 'Entroido Ribeirao' ancient carnival in Chantada, on February 12, 2017.

With spring just around the corner, Spaniards in the country’s northwest are welcoming the new season.

During the 'Entroido Ribeirao' carnival in Galicia, some covered themselves in animal skins, while others wore bells around their waists.

The festival deals with the end of the winter, and criticizes feudal lords and landowners.

The carnival goers symbolically parade across fields as they believe it will ensure that their crops prosper in the coming year. Participants stage performances, trying to involve the public in the celebration.

The ritual was prohibited during Spain’s civil war, but residents in the area revived the tradition in the 1990s.
